Storage & Shelf Life

Proper storage preserves potency and keeps your truffles safe. Here's how to store fresh and dried truffles, what degrades them, and when to throw them out.

Fresh Truffle Storage

Fresh truffles are perishable. Temperature and packaging are the two biggest factors in shelf life.

Storage Method Temperature Shelf Life Notes
Sealed package (unopened) 2–8 ℃ (fridge) 2–3 months Keep in original vacuum-sealed packaging
Opened package 2–8 ℃ (fridge) 2–3 weeks Wrap tightly, use quickly
Room temperature 20 ℃+ A few days max NOT recommended — rapid degradation
Can you freeze fresh truffles? Not recommended. Freezing damages cell structures due to ice crystal formation, which can alter texture and affect potency unevenly. Refrigeration (2–8 ℃) is always preferred for fresh truffles.

Dried Truffles, Powder & Capsules

Properly dried material lasts far longer than fresh. The key is removing all moisture first, then keeping it sealed.

Storage Method Shelf Life Notes
Airtight container, dark, cool 6–12 months Best long-term option
With silica gel packet 12+ months Absorbs residual moisture
Vacuum-sealed 12+ months Best preservation method
Freezing dried truffles? Unnecessary. Properly dried material in airtight containers will last 12+ months at room temperature. Save your freezer space.

The Four Enemies of Potency

Psilocybin degrades when exposed to these four factors. Minimize all of them for maximum shelf life.

🌄 Oxygen

Oxidizes psilocybin over time. Always use airtight containers — mason jars, vacuum bags, or containers with rubber seals.

💧 Moisture

Causes mold growth and chemical degradation. Ensure truffles are bone-dry before long-term storage. Add silica gel packets as insurance.

☀️ Light

UV radiation degrades psilocybin. Store in dark containers (amber glass jars work great) or keep them in a dark cabinet or drawer.

🔥 Heat

Accelerates all degradation processes. Store at cool room temperature or in the fridge. Never leave truffles in warm places or direct sunlight.

Signs of Spoilage

Inspect your truffles before each use. Look out for these warning signs:

Do not consume truffles that show any of these signs:
  • Visible mold — white, green, or black fuzzy growth
  • Slimy or wet texture — especially on fresh truffles that should be firm
  • Strong, foul, or fermented smell — distinct from the normal earthy scent
  • Significant discoloration — beyond normal blue bruising
When in doubt, throw it out. Consuming spoiled truffles can cause gastrointestinal illness. Truffles are inexpensive enough that it's never worth the risk.
