Psilocybin Truffles
What truffles are, why they're legal in the Netherlands, and which varieties are best for microdosing
What Are Truffles?
Psilocybin truffles are sclerotia — dense masses of hardened mycelium that certain psilocybin-producing fungi grow underground as a food reserve. They are biologically part of the same organism as "magic mushrooms" but grow beneath the soil rather than above it.
Truffles vs Mushrooms
| Feature | Truffles (Sclerotia) | Mushrooms (Fruiting Bodies) |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | Underground | Above ground |
| Active compounds | Psilocybin & psilocin | Psilocybin & psilocin (same) |
| Water content | Lower — denser | Higher |
| Potency consistency | More predictable | Varies widely (cap vs stem) |
| Texture & taste | Dense, chewy, earthy/nutty | Lighter, rubbery |
| Legal in NL | Yes — sold openly | No — banned since 2008 |
Why Truffles Are Legal in the Netherlands
In December 2008, the Netherlands banned psilocybin mushrooms (the fruiting bodies) by adding them to the Opium Act, following concerns about tourist incidents.
However, sclerotia (truffles) were not explicitly listed in the ban. Since they are technically a different part of the organism — underground growth, not the mushroom fruiting body — they remained legal. This was later confirmed by Dutch courts, and psilocybin truffles have been sold openly in licensed smartshops ever since.
Truffle Varieties & Potency
Different truffle varieties have significantly different potency levels. This is critical for microdosing — using the wrong variety at the wrong dose can mean the difference between feeling nothing and being uncomfortably high.
Potency Ranking
| Variety | Species | Potency | Psilocybin | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mexicana | P. mexicana | Mild | ~0.6% | Beginners, microdosing. Gentle, cheerful, social. 3–4h. |
| Utopia | P. mexicana var. | Mild | ~0.6% | Beginners, relaxation. Warm, relaxed feeling. |
| Tampanensis | P. tampanensis | Medium | ~0.7% | Creative work, reflection. "Philosopher's Stones." 4–5h. |
| Pajaritos | P. mexicana var. | Medium | ~0.8% | Nature, visual experiences. Enhanced colors. 4–5h. |
| Atlantis | P. atlantis | Strong | ~1.0% | Experienced users. Intense visuals at full dose. 5–6h. |
| Hollandia | P. hollandia | Strong | ~1.5% | Advanced users. Deep, intense. Reduce dose significantly. |
| Valhalla | P. valhalla | Very Strong | >1.5% | Veteran psychonauts. NOT for microdosing beginners. |
Start with Mexicana or Tampanensis. These are the most commonly used varieties for microdosing because:
- Consistent, mild potency
- Well-documented dosing ranges
- Most pre-made microdosing products use these varieties
- Forgiving if you slightly over-dose
If using a stronger variety (Atlantis, Hollandia), reduce your dose by 30–50% compared to Mexicana guidelines.
Batch Variability
Lab analysis of fresh truffle sclerotia shows a range of 59 mg to 168 mg psilocybin per 100g — nearly a 3x difference. Even within the same variety, potency can vary depending on growing conditions, substrate, age, and storage.
This is why the calibration process is so important: always start low with a new batch, even if you've dialed in your dose before.
